The best thing about the “Drei Zinnen” isn’t the hotel at all, but what is immediately beyond the front door. Endless
hiking and walking trails, climbing routes and
mountain biking tracks through forests and passes and across plateaus. Bikes can be stored in our bike cellar. For all those who promise not to annoy the hikers!
Hill-walking, trekking, hiking - whatever you
care to call it, has always been a favourite sport. Come and
enjoy these activities in the charming surroundings of the
Sesto Dolomites.
You will walk before a splendid backdrop of imposing peaks with
great views, over thrilling climbing trails and
ever varying paths, and you can end your
adventure trip in the pleasant atmosphere of one of the many
cosy mountain huts. When summer comes, the
conditions in the mountains are ideal for all kinds of
excursions. In these pages you can find good advice on how to
spend an active holiday, ranging from classic
outings to some rather special proposals.
Hiking along the old wartime trails - history enthusiasts will
be keen to go trekking in this area: Sesto saw combat during the
First World War, when the Dolomite front included the Three
Peaks of Lavaredo and Monte Piano.
This area is without doubt a real “trekking paradise”
for every hiker; whether you go alone or with a guide (every
week our guests can take part free of charge in 3 one-day or
half-day excursions organised by the Sesto Alpine School), there
is something to suit all tastes!
Here are some hiking and climbing suggestions:
E X C U R S I O N S
From Val Fiscalina to the Three Peaks of Lavaredo:
The starting point is the car park at Val
Fiscalina.
Itinerary: Val Fiscalina – Fondo Valle Hut –
Zsigmondy-Comici Hut – Pian di Cengia Hut – Three Peaks of
Lavaredo Hut – Val Sassovecchio – Val Fiscalina
Time: 6 – 7 hours
Description: from Val Fiscalina you go as far as the Fondo Valle
Hut, from which you go up through Val Sassovecchio and the Upper
Val Fiscalina to the Zsigmondy Hut, always in sight of the
magnificent views of the rocky landscapes of the Sesto
Dolomites.
From the Zsigmondy Hut you proceed over rocky terrain to the
Pian di Cengia Hut, from which you go steeply down to the Three
Peaks of Lavaredo Hut. Before you stand the impressive “Three
Peaks of Lavaredo”. From the Three Peaks of Lavaredo Hut you
take the marked return path, passing through Val Sassovecchio
till you get back to the starting point in Val Fiscalina.
Type: easy high-level hike over well marked
trails. Following this classic route, hikers can fully enjoy the
perfect beauty of the Sesto Dolomites. The view of the north
faces of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo is unforgettable.
Prati di Croda Rossa
Starting point: Bagni di Moso, bottom station
of the cable car to the Meadows or Prati di Croda Rossa
Itinerary: Top station - Prati di Croda Rossa -
Monte Croce Pass
Time: 2 – 2.5 hours
Take the Croda Rossa cable car up to the top station, from which
you walk across the fairly flat Meadows of Croda Rossa, then up
through a wooded area followed by the rocky formations of Croda
Rossa di Sesto and on to the Monte Croce Pass. You will walk on
old war trails of the First World War. Returning from the Monte
Croce Pass you can take the "Sesto Trail" back to your starting
point.
Type: easy mountain hike over good trails. The
route offers an excellent overview of the geology and the
cultural landscape of Sesto.
Monte Casella di Fuori and Monte Casella di Dentro
Starting point: Unterdorf di Sesto, Ferrara
district
Itinerary: Ferrara– Monte Casella di Fuori – Monte Casella di
Dentro – Sesto
Time: 4.5 – 5 hours
Type: easy mountain hike over well marked
trails. The meadows of Monte Casella are characterised by a wide
variety of flora, a precious suggestion for nature-lovers and
people in search of relaxation. They also offer a magnificent
view of the scenery of the Sesto Sundial.
Excursion to the mountain pastures
Starting point: Sesto / Moso or Monte Croce
Pass (several variants are possible)
Itinerary: from Sesto/Moso over the so-called "Oltl"
on a forest road through thick woods up to Malga Klammbach; from
Malga Klammbach you continue along the High Trail to Malga di
Nemes with extensive pastures and a splendid view of the Sesto
Dolomites. You then go down wooded slopes to Malga Coltrondo,
continue in the direction of the Monte Croce Pass and return
from there to the starting point, following a marked trail. All
three mountain pastures are open in summer.
Type: easy to medium hike to the Sesto mountain
pastures.
C L I M B S
for serious climbers
Cima Grande di Lavaredo, 2999 m
This is the middle and highest of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo.
The vertical, partly overhanging north wall is eye-catching. The
northeast wall is a favourite, pleasant classic climb, whereas
the north face routes are only for extreme climbers.
Punta dei Tre Scarperi, 3.152 m
A pointed rocky pyramid between Valle Campo di Dentro and Val
Fiscalina. It is the highest peak in the Sesto Dolomites. You
start off from the Tre Scarperi Hut and go up the
Steinalpenscharte Fork with a moderately difficult climb on the
steep rock face of the east side. Other medium difficulty Alpine
climbs are possible on the walls.
Monte Piano, 2.324 m
Isolated mountain standing west of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo.
It forms a flat, grassy plateau which was fiercely contested
during the First World War because of its strategically
important position. The war walkways and positions have been
recreated and incorporated into an outdoor museum. From the
Angelo-Bosi Hut you go up 30 m to the southern peak. From there
you can follow splendid high-mountain routes towards the lower
northern peak. You can also climb up from the valley over the
old “war trails” starting off from Carbonin.
Croda Rossa, 2.965 m
Ramified rock formation in an advanced position between Val
Fiscalina and the Monte Croce Pass - “Peak Ten” on the Sesto
Sundial. Most of the climbs do not end at the main summit, but
on the lower north summit. Equipped climbing routes facilitate
access to the peak from which you can admire a splendid view.
The easiest climb (up the Postal) begins near the Prati di Croda
Rossa Hut and runs from the north to the summit; a longer
variation leads to the lower section of the Costoni di Croda
Rossa. |
